PROCESS PUMPS & COMPONENTS

Process pumps are mechanical equipment used to transfer, circulate, or pressurize liquids in industrial plants. They are widely used in chemical, petrochemical, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, power, water treatment, and manufacturing industries. Common types include centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps, gear pumps, screw pumps, diaphragm pumps, and reciprocating pumps.

The main components of a centrifugal process pump include the casing, impeller, shaft, mechanical seal, bearings, wear rings, coupling, bearing housing, suction nozzle, and discharge nozzle. The impeller transfers energy to the liquid, while the casing converts velocity into pressure and guides the liquid toward the discharge. The shaft transmits power from the driver to the impeller, and bearings support the rotating assembly.

Mechanical seals or packing prevent leakage along the rotating shaft. Wear rings help maintain proper internal clearances and reduce leakage between the impeller and casing. Couplings connect the pump shaft to the motor or other driver.

Proper material selection is important depending on the pumped fluid, temperature, pressure, corrosion, and wear conditions. Materials may include carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex stainless steel, alloy steel, cast iron, and special alloys.

Important pump parameters include flow rate, head, pressure, speed, power, efficiency, NPSH, and operating temperature. During maintenance, components such as bearings, mechanical seals, impellers, shafts, and wear rings should be inspected for wear, corrosion, cracks, and dimensional changes.

Correct alignment, lubrication, balancing, and operating conditions are essential for reliable pump performance and longer service life.
